Dehradun, January 10, 2025 – Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami announced that Uttarakhand will implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) starting this month, becoming the first Indian state to do so. The UCC is designed to provide a unified set of personal laws for marriage, divorce, inheritance, and maintenance, applicable to all citizens regardless of religion, gender, caste, or sex.
The legislation, which received President Droupadi Murmu’s assent on March 11, 2024, was enacted by the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly on February 7, 2024. To facilitate the implementation, the state government has developed a portal and mobile app for registration. Chief Minister Dhami emphasized that the UCC would empower women and children, fostering inclusive development across the state.
