    Vijay Shankar, Ex-CBI Chief, Passes Away Following Long Illness

    New Delhi, December 3, 2024 — Former CBI Director Vijay Shankar passed away after a prolonged battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 76 years old. Shankar had been receiving treatment at a private hospital in Noida, and in accordance with his final wishes, his remains were donated to AIIMS.

    Shankar was a 1969-batch IPS officer from the Uttar Pradesh cadre and served as the Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) from December 12, 2005, to July 31, 2008. During his tenure, he oversaw several high-profile investigations, including the Aarushi-Hemraj double murder case. He also played a pivotal role in the extradition of gangster Abu Salem and in investigating the Telgi scam.

    His career spanned multiple high-ranking positions in national security and law enforcement, including as head of the National Disaster Response Force and serving in the BSF during the 1990s in Jammu and Kashmir. Shankar was honored with the President’s Police Medal for his distinguished service. His passing was deeply mourned, with former CBI Director Anil Sinha remembering him for his sharp intellect and principled conduct​.
