Dehradun, January 4, 2025: Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami announced that the state will implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) this month, making it the first state in India to do so. The UCC aims to standardize personal laws across communities, covering areas such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, and maintenance. Key provisions include a common minimum marriageable age, uniform divorce grounds, equal inheritance rights for sons and daughters, and the registration of live-in relationships, along with the prohibition of polygamy and reinforcement of the national ban on child marriage.
The UCC’s implementation follows extensive preparations, including the formation of an expert committee and the passage of the UCC Bill 2024 in the State Legislative Assembly. CM Dhami highlighted that the UCC is designed to empower women and children, promote inclusive development, and ensure equal rights for all Uttarakhand residents.
With all preparations in place, the Uttarakhand government is ready to begin implementing the UCC this month. The move is expected to serve as a model for other states considering similar reforms, promoting social justice and equality for women and marginalized communities.
