Washington, December 4, 2024: Republican lawmaker Congressman John Rose from Tennessee has called for the imposition of robust tariffs on ceramic tile imports from India. In a letter to U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, Rose argued that Indian ceramic tile producers benefit from government subsidies and engage in dumping practices, which he claims undermine U.S. manufacturers. Rose contends that these practices have led to a surge in tile imports from India, adversely affecting American jobs, particularly in Tennessee’s ceramic tile industry.
The call for tariffs follows the U.S. Department of Commerce’s earlier investigations into potential antidumping violations, but Rose and other lawmakers believe that more aggressive actions are needed to protect the domestic market. The Tile Council of North America (TCNA) has also voiced concerns, noting that the influx of subsidized tiles has disrupted the competitive balance. They emphasize that while U.S. manufacturers welcome fair competition, the current practices from Indian exporters are deemed unfair.
This move reflects ongoing trade tensions regarding Indian exports, with the aim of addressing what lawmakers consider to be harmful practices that could weaken the U.S. manufacturing sector in the long term.
