Washington, D.C., March 27, 2025 — A bipartisan group of twelve U.S. House representatives has introduced the Uyghur Human Rights Protection Act, which seeks to expedite asylum for Uyghurs and other ethnic minorities fleeing persecution in China. The bill aims to grant Priority 2 (P-2) refugee status, allowing faster resettlement and access to U.S. asylum procedures.
Co-sponsor Representative Suhas Subramanyam expressed concerns over the ongoing repression of Uyghurs in China’s Xinjiang region, calling it “genocide.” He emphasized the importance of providing refuge to those escaping persecution and highlighted the bill’s provision for protecting Uyghur refugees in third countries through collaboration with international partners for resettlement.
