Washington D.C. [USA], March 4, 2025: President Donald Trump has criticized India’s high import tariffs on U.S. automobiles, which reportedly exceed 100%, calling them unfair. In response, he announced plans to impose reciprocal tariffs on Indian goods starting in April as part of a broader strategy to address trade imbalances and protect American industries.
Indian Trade Minister Piyush Goyal has traveled to the U.S. to discuss the potential impact of these tariffs. The proposed measures could affect key sectors like automobiles and agriculture, with analysts estimating a $7 billion annual loss for Indian exporters. While India has previously reduced tariffs on some U.S. goods, challenges remain, particularly in agriculture, where India aims to protect domestic farmers.
