US President-elect Donald Trump completed his sweep of swing states by securing victory in Arizona, according to media reports. With this win, Trump has defeated his Democratic rival, Kamala Harris, in all seven key battleground states, also known as purple states. These states, which include Arizona, Nevada, Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Georgia, are crucial for determining the outcome of presidential elections due to their competitive nature.
Trump’s victory in Arizona brought his electoral college tally to 312, while Harris stood at 226. Arizona, which holds 11 electoral college votes, was previously won by President Joe Biden in 2020, making Trump’s win a significant shift. Arizona is the sixth state that Trump has flipped from Biden’s 2020 victory, joining Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. Trump also secured North Carolina, a state he narrowly won in 2020.
In addition to his victory in swing states, the Republican Party regained control of the Senate with 52 seats, while the Democrats hold 47. In the House of Representatives, Republicans have secured 216 seats, just two shy of the majority mark of 218. With several races still ongoing, Republicans are confident they will gain the necessary seats to maintain a majority in the House as well.
Trump’s success in Arizona came after a campaign that focused heavily on border security, immigration, and crime, particularly related to illegal immigration. These issues resonated with Arizona voters, especially amid a record influx of migrants last year. Trump had pledged mass deportations, the hiring of additional border agents, and using military funds for border security, all of which bolstered his appeal in the state. Trump will be sworn in as the 47th President of the United States on January 20.
