Trump Boasts Tariffs Bring $2 Billion a Day, Warns Pharma Imports Next

Washington, D.C., April 9, 2025: U.S. President Donald Trump declared that countries hit by recent American tariffs are eager to strike trade deals with Washington. Speaking at a Republican gathering on Capitol Hill, Trump said the new 10% global base tariff is earning the U.S. around $2 billion daily. He also revealed plans to impose fresh tariffs on imported pharmaceutical goods to push foreign manufacturers to shift production to the U.S.

The announcement comes as trade tensions rise, especially with China, which retaliated against U.S. tariffs with a 34% levy on American goods. In response, the U.S. slapped a 104% tariff on Chinese exports. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent criticized Beijing’s move as a miscalculation, while China vowed to resist what it called American “blackmail.” The standoff has sparked concerns over a looming global economic slowdown.
