Taiwan Plans Immigration Overhaul to Curb China’s Influence from Hong Kong, Macau

Taipei, March 3, 2025: Taiwan is planning changes to its immigration laws to limit potential Chinese Communist Party (CCP) influence through immigrants from Hong Kong and Macau. The proposed amendments would extend the residency requirement for permanent residency from one year to four years and may eliminate the option for these individuals to obtain citizenship.

Additionally, the reforms introduce stricter background checks for applicants with past affiliations to the CCP, the Chinese military, or Chinese public institutions, which could result in application denials. Officials argue that these changes are necessary due to shifting political dynamics in Hong Kong and Macau, making previous residency policies no longer suitable.
