Supreme Court Orders Relief for Workers Hit by GRAP Stage 4 Measures

New Delhi, December 19, 2024: The Supreme Court of India has directed both central and state governments to provide immediate relief to workers affected by the implementation of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) Stage 4. The stringent air pollution control measures under GRAP 4, which include halting construction activities and restricting industrial operations, have resulted in widespread job losses and financial hardships for daily-wage and contractual workers.

The bench, led by the Chief Justice of India, emphasized the need for governments to devise a comprehensive plan to support affected workers, including financial assistance and alternative employment opportunities. The court noted that while addressing environmental concerns is crucial, the livelihoods of vulnerable workers must not be overlooked.

This directive comes as the National Capital Region (NCR) continues to grapple with hazardous air quality levels, forcing authorities to enforce stricter pollution control measures. The Supreme Court’s intervention is expected to provide some respite to workers while ensuring that pollution control efforts remain effective.
