Sealdah Court Grants Bail to Accused in High-Profile Doctor Rape-Murder Case

Kolkata, December 13, 2024: Former police officer Abhijit Mondal and Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the ex-principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, were granted bail today in connection with the rape and murder case of a trainee doctor. The Sealdah court decided to release them on bail after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) failed to file a chargesheet against them within the mandatory 90-day period, as required by law. Both individuals were granted bail bonds of Rs 2,000 each.

Mondal faces allegations of delaying the filing of the FIR, while Ghosh is accused of tampering with evidence in the case. The victim, a 31-year-old post-graduate trainee doctor, was found raped and murdered in the seminar room of the hospital on August 9, 2024. The investigation is ongoing, with the CBI having filed a chargesheet against the primary accused, Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer. Mondal and Ghosh have been directed to cooperate with the ongoing investigation.

Despite being granted bail in the rape-murder case, Ghosh will remain in custody due to his involvement in another case concerning alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar hospital.
