SC Rejects Mamata’s Request to Transfer RG Kar Case, Orders CBI Probe

The Supreme Court’s recent decision has dealt a significant blow to the Mamata Banerjee government as it denied the request for transferring the trial of the RG Kar rape and murder case. This case involves the tragic death of a 31-year-old postgraduate doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, which the family initially suspected was a suicide. However, post-mortem results revealed signs of sexual assault and murder.

During the hearing, the Supreme Court raised serious concerns over the delay in filing the FIR, the mishandling of the crime scene, and the suppression of evidence by hospital authorities. The court also criticized the Bengal government’s response to public protests, particularly after the brutal nature of the crime became public. It emphasized that the state should not suppress the voice of protestors, including doctors, who were subjected to threats and intimidation.

This case has drawn widespread attention due to the alleged misconduct of the hospital and police officials involved, leading to the Supreme Court’s directive for a thorough investigation by the CBI.
