New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday delivered a verdict on the nationwide property demolition drive, criticizing the practice of “instant bulldozer justice.” The court emphasized that the Executive cannot act as a judge and demolish properties without due process. It ruled that no demolition could take place without a show-cause notice, issued at least 15 days before any action, and that all demolitions must be videographed for transparency.
The court clarified that its guidelines would not apply in cases of unauthorized construction on public land or when demolition orders were issued by courts. It stressed the constitutional rights of accused and convicted individuals.
