Kolkata, December 12: The Bengali book publishing industry is facing severe setbacks due to political unrest in Bangladesh and the economic downturn that has reduced purchasing power. Sales have dropped by 50%, affecting both local exchanges and cross-border trade between Kolkata and Dhaka. The ongoing political turmoil has resulted in fewer “floating” readers—those who typically buy books during visits between the two countries. The disruption in book fairs has further hampered the industry.
Inflation and economic uncertainty have exacerbated the situation, making books a luxury for many middle-income families. These factors have particularly impacted the Bangladeshi market. However, local bookstores continue to maintain a loyal customer base, offering some hope for recovery.
Publishers remain cautiously optimistic despite these challenges, with hopes that the situation may improve in the coming months if political stability and economic conditions in both countries are restored.
