UNSC India Permanent Membership: Russia has once again stood in support of India obtaining permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). Russia reiterated that India, Brazil, and African countries should have permanent representation in the UNSC.
Representation of Majority Groups is Essential:
“Representatives from India, Brazil, and African nations should hold permanent positions in the UN Security Council. It is crucial to ensure representation for majority groups,” said Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. In an interview with a local media outlet, he emphasized that India must secure permanent membership.
India is Eligible for Permanent Membership:
India has long argued that reforms are needed in the UNSC, pointing out that contemporary geopolitical developments are not adequately reflected in the UN. In this context, India’s claim of being a country eligible for permanent membership is gaining traction among major nations. While support for India’s representation is increasing from countries around the world, only China has been opposing it.
U.S. President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron have already expressed support for India, while British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has also stated that India deserves representation. Currently, the permanent members of the Security Council include the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Russia, and China.
