Retired Indian Navy UH-3H Helicopter Installed at Visakhapatnam’s TU-142 Aircraft Museum

VISAKHAPATNAM: Visakhapatnam has unveiled a new addition to its TU-142 Aircraft Museum with the installation of the Indian Navy’s retired UH-3H helicopter, which had served for 17 years before its de-induction in June 2024. The helicopter, named ‘Saaras,’ now rests on RK Beach Road, where it joins other naval assets like an anti-submarine aircraft and a Sea Harrier fighter plane. This installation aims to provide visitors a unique opportunity to experience what it’s like to be inside the helicopter and learn about its role in various military operations.

According to Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority (VMRDA) Commissioner KS Viswanathan, the project is estimated to cost around Rs 3 crore. He highlighted that efforts are underway to include additional features, such as exhibits detailing the history and technical aspects of the UH-3H helicopter. The project is expected to be completed within three months, enhancing the museum’s educational value and attracting more tourists to the city.

The UH-3H, inducted into the Indian Navy on March 24, 2009, at INS Dega, played a significant role in special operations, search-and-rescue missions, and humanitarian assistance during natural disasters. Its involvement in offshore security, logistical support, and safeguarding India’s maritime boundaries made it a crucial asset. The helicopter’s name, ‘Saaras,’ symbolizes strength, grace, and vigilance, echoing the qualities of the Sarus crane in India.

The de-induction ceremony on June 28, 2024, at INS Dega marked the end of the helicopter’s illustrious service. During the ceremony, Vice-Admiral Sameer Saxena, Chief of Staff, Eastern Naval Command, presented a commemorative plaque to the State government. With the addition of the UH-3H helicopter at RK Beach, the TU-142 Aircraft Museum offers an insightful glimpse into the history of the Indian Navy’s aerial assets, enhancing the city’s appeal as a tourist and educational destination.
