Chandigarh ,December 27, 2024: The ongoing farmers’ protest in Punjab, referred to as “Farmers Protest 2.0,” has intensified in recent weeks, with thousands of farmers taking to the streets to oppose government policies they believe undermine their livelihoods. What began as a reaction to agricultural reforms and unresolved demands from previous protests has now evolved into a significant political movement.
Farmers are demanding the repeal of certain farm laws, better Minimum Support Price (MSP) guarantees, and a more supportive agricultural policy. They claim that the government has failed to fulfill promises made during earlier protests, particularly regarding farm-related compensation and the implementation of reforms that would benefit farmers directly. Their frustrations have led to widespread demonstrations and public dissatisfaction with the state’s handling of agricultural issues.
Meanwhile, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), historically a major political force in Punjab, is facing a series of setbacks. The party’s handling of the farmers’ issue has drawn significant criticism, and some of its former allies have started distancing themselves. SAD’s inability to mediate between farmers and the state government has further eroded its support base, especially in rural areas. As the protest continues, political leaders from all sides are calling for dialogue and a resolution, but with no clear solution in sight, the situation remains tense.
