MUMBAI: Eknath Shinde, the current Chief Minister of Maharashtra, is expected to step down on November 26, 2024, following the Mahayuti alliance’s success in the state assembly elections. The BJP, which emerged as the largest party with 132 seats, was supported by Shinde’s Shiv Sena faction, which secured 57 seats.
Reports indicate that Devendra Fadnavis, BJP leader and former Chief Minister, is likely to replace Shinde. This transition comes amid ongoing power-sharing talks between the BJP and Shiv Sena.
The election results have propelled the BJP and its allies to the forefront, signaling a shift in Maharashtra’s political landscape. The opposition, especially the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), struggled, winning only 46 seats.
Negotiations continue on the distribution of power within the alliance, including the Chief Minister’s post. Fadnavis has emphasized that there is no dispute over the leadership, with the final decision on the next CM to be made collectively by the alliance.
