Pneumonia Cases Surge in Gurugram Kids as Winter, Pollution Rise: Doctors Advise Caution

As temperatures drop each day, winter approaches, bringing an increased risk of cold-weather-related illnesses, such as pneumonia and asthma.

Paras Health Hospital in Gurugram reports a notable rise in pneumonia cases among children as cold weather combines with increasing pollution levels.

    What Causes Pneumonia?

“With seasonal changes and rising pollution, we’re observing a concerning increase in pneumonia cases, particularly in children,” said Dr. Rakesh Tiwari, Senior Consultant in Pediatrics at Paras Health, Gurugram. “Children with pre-existing respiratory conditions like asthma are especially vulnerable, and even mild symptoms now require more intensive care. It’s essential for families to take proactive measures to safeguard their health during this season.”

    Precautions to Reduce Pneumonia Risks

Dr. Tiwari offers several tips to help reduce pneumonia risks as winter sets in:

    • Stay indoors during peak pollution hours, especially in the morning and evening, and consider using air purifiers to improve indoor air quality.
    • Wear masks when outdoors, and ensure homes are well-ventilated for a healthy indoor environment.
    • Maintain hydration, a balanced diet, and stay up-to-date with vaccinations, including flu and pneumonia vaccines.
    • Avoid strenuous outdoor activities on high-pollution days, and address mild respiratory symptoms promptly, as early intervention can help prevent severe complications.
