New Delhi, April 4, 2025: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has hailed the passage of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, and the Mussalman Wakf (Repeal) Bill in Parliament, calling it a “watershed moment” for transparency and socio-economic justice. The Rajya Sabha passed the bill with 128 votes in favor and 95 against, after its approval in the Lok Sabha. The legislation now awaits the President’s assent.
The bill increases government oversight of waqf properties and allows non-Muslims on waqf boards, aiming to enhance transparency. However, opposition parties and Muslim organizations argue it threatens religious rights and could lead to the loss of historical properties. The All India Muslim Personal Law Board has strongly opposed the move.
