A female student of the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Patna was found hanging inside her hostel room on the campus located in Bihta on the outskirts of the Bihar capital, police said on Saturday.
The body of the woman, who hailed from Andhra Pradesh, was found hanging from the ceiling fan of her hostel room. A suicide note was also found at the spot.
“A call was received by the police around 10.15 pm on Friday informing that a female student committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling fan inside her hostel room. Police reached there and found her body… she was taken to the nearest government hospital, where she was declared brought dead,” a police statement said, without identifying the deceased, PTI reported.
“The body has been sent for post-mortem examination… the deceased is a resident of Andhra Pradesh… her family members have been informed. A suicide note has also been found at the spot… All scientific evidence is being collected from the spot and further investigation is underway,” the statement said.
The exact cause of the incident is not yet known, it added.
As the news of the student’s death spread, a large number of students of the institute gathered outside the campus and raised slogans against the institute’s administration.
In a different unrelated incident, a class 12 student allegedly committed suicide in Rajasthan’s Kota. The 19 year old student jumped to death from 12th floor of a building on September 18, 2024. The deceased was a resident of Kota and her body has been handed over to her family after postmortem. She took the extreme step at her aunt’s place in the Tripolis Building in Rajiv Gandhi Nagar.
Jawahar Nagar police station SHO Harinarayan Sharma told IANS that she was the eldest of two sisters. Her father runs a nursing home in the city. “On Tuesday evening around 7 p.m, father dropped the daughter under the multi-storeyed building of her aunt’s house. Her aunt resides on the third floor of the building. However, instead of going to her aunt’s house, she took the extreme step,” the SHO said. The police further said that the cause of the extreme step is yet to be identified.
“As per preliminary investigation, the girl jumped off the 12th floor. She committed suicide due to depression. Her family members are also in shock after the death of their daughter. The reason for the suicide will be known only after talking to the family members and a post-mortem report is received. At present, the investigation is being carried out keeping all aspects in mind,” DSP Rajesh Taylor told IANS.
