Mumbai: The Mumbai Police have registered an extortion case and summoned a lawyer from Chhattisgarh in connection with a death threat against Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan and a demand for ₹50 lakh, officials reported on Thursday. The lawyer from Raipur was summoned as the threat call originated from a phone number registered in his name, a senior Chhattisgarh police official said. The lawyer claimed that he lost his phone last week and filed a police complaint.
According to a senior Mumbai police official, the Bandra police station received a call threatening Shah Rukh Khan and demanding ₹50 lakh. An offence has been registered, though no arrests have been made. The case was filed under sections 308(4) (extortion involving threats of death or serious injury) and 351(3)(4) (criminal intimidation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Notably, this threat to Khan follows similar threats issued to fellow actor Salman Khan, reportedly from the Lawrence Bishnoi gang.
As part of the investigation, Mumbai Police visited Raipur and summoned the lawyer, identified as Faizan Khan, residing in the Pandri police station area. Raipur’s Senior Superintendent of Police Santosh Singh confirmed that the threat call was made from a phone number registered under Faizan’s name. Faizan told the police that his phone was stolen on November 2, and he had lodged a complaint with the Khamardih police station in Raipur. Mumbai Police served a notice to Faizan, instructing him to appear for further questioning at Bandra police station.
Later, speaking to reporters in Raipur, Faizan Khan claimed that the call from his number was part of a conspiracy. He explained that he had previously lodged a complaint with the Mumbai Police against Shah Rukh Khan over a dialogue in the movie Anjaam (1994) referencing deer hunting, which he found offensive due to his ties with Rajasthan’s Bishnoi community, known for protecting deer. Faizan stated, “Whoever used my phone to make the call, it seems intentional. I believe this is a conspiracy against me.”
