Mumbai, April 17, 2025 – Maharashtra has implemented a key aspect of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, making Hindi a mandatory third language for students in classes 1 to 5. This initiative aims to promote multilingualism and strengthen national language skills across primary schools in the state.
While the decision has received support for enhancing language proficiency, it has also sparked concerns about the impact on regional languages. The education department has assured that necessary resources and training will be provided for smooth implementation, with the goal of fostering national integration through the inclusion of Hindi.
