New Delhi, January 4, 2025: The Kumbh Mela and Maha Kumbh are two of the most significant Hindu religious congregations, attracting millions of devotees from around the globe. While both events are celebrated with great reverence, there are notable differences between the two.
The Kumbh Mela is held every three years, rotating among four locations: Haridwar, Prayagraj (Allahabad), Nashik, and Ujjain. Each location hosts the event once every 12 years. On the other hand, the Maha Kumbh occurs exclusively in Prayagraj once every 144 years, making it a rarer and more monumental event. The Maha Kumbh is considered the most auspicious congregation in Hindu tradition, often referred to as the “Grand Kumbh.”
Both gatherings are marked by ritualistic bathing in sacred rivers, believed to cleanse sins and bestow spiritual merit. However, the Maha Kumbh is distinguished by its unparalleled scale and deeper spiritual significance, drawing an even larger number of saints, seers, and devotees compared to the regular Kumbh Mela.
