KFCC Bans Kamal Haasan’s Thug Life Over Kannada Language Controversy

Bengaluru, May 30, 2025 – The Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) has imposed a ban on the release of Kamal Haasan’s film Thug Life in Karnataka due to his controversial comment suggesting that Kannada originated from Tamil. This remark, made during a promotional event, triggered protests from pro-Kannada groups and politicians demanding a public apology. The KFCC has stated that the film will only be allowed to release in the state if Haasan issues a formal apology.

Karnataka’s Minister for Kannada and Culture, Shivaraj Tangadagi, supported the KFCC’s decision, asserting that Haasan’s comment hurt Kannada sentiments. Although Haasan later clarified that his statement was based on historical context and meant with respect, Kannada organizations remain unsatisfied and firm on their demand. The controversy now threatens the June 5 release of Thug Life in Karnataka, pending Haasan’s response.
