Supreme Court On Child Marriage: The country’s highest court clarified that personal laws should not be an obstacle to the implementation of the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act. The Supreme Court opined that marrying in childhood deprives individuals of the freedom to choose their life partner.
To effectively implement the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act in the country, a bench comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala, and Justice Manoj Mishra issued guidelines on Friday. The court emphasized that personal laws should not impede the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act. It stated that child marriages deny minors the freedom to choose their life partners. The court advised authorities to focus on child marriages and the protection of minors. It mandated that penalties be imposed on offenders.
