Kesavan Praises “One Nation, One Election” for Restoring Constitutional Integrity

New Delhi, December 13, 2024: BJP National Spokesperson CR Kesavan recently praised the “One Nation, One Election” initiative, stating that it aligns with the original spirit of India’s Constitution. He argued that the framers of the Constitution had envisioned simultaneous elections as the norm, a practice followed until the late 1960s. Kesavan criticized Congress for disrupting this system under Indira Gandhi’s leadership, during which 39 democratically elected state governments were toppled, effectively ending the cycle of synchronized elections.

Kesavan highlighted that the proposed “One Nation, One Election” system would restore the Constitution’s original structure, fostering political stability, better governance, and the efficient use of public funds. He pointed out that this reform has gained support from multiple political parties, even those in opposition, due to its potential to reduce corruption and increase voter engagement.

Despite some opposition, including criticism from Karnataka Deputy CM DK Shivakumar, who called the proposal practically unfeasible, Kesavan remains optimistic. He believes that the initiative will help consolidate India’s federal structure and contribute significantly to the nation’s development and governance.
