Jal Jeevan Mission: Government Aims for Universal Tap Water Access by 2025

New Delhi, December 26, 2024: The Jal Shakti Ministry has set an ambitious target to complete the mission of providing tap water connections to every rural household in India by 2025. This initiative, under the Jal Jeevan Mission, aims to ensure safe and adequate drinking water for millions of rural families, significantly improving public health and hygiene. The Ministry is also working towards achieving comprehensive sanitation coverage, including the construction of household toilets and the management of wastewater.

Officials have stated that over 90% of rural households already have access to tap water connections, marking a significant milestone since the launch of the program in 2019. The remaining households are expected to be covered by next year, with special focus on remote and water-scarce regions. The initiative is being supported through state partnerships, with a keen emphasis on community participation to ensure sustainability.

The Ministry also highlighted its focus on integrated water management, including measures to recharge groundwater, manage greywater, and protect water bodies in rural areas. These efforts align with India’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and aim to provide lasting solutions to water and sanitation challenges in rural regions.
