Jaishankar Voices Concern Over Minority Attacks in Bangladesh

New Delhi, December 13, 2024 – India’s External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, has expressed concern over the treatment of minorities in Bangladesh, particularly in light of a series of violent attacks against the Hindu community. Speaking in the Lok Sabha, Jaishankar called the situation a “source of concern” and highlighted multiple incidents targeting minorities, especially Hindus. He mentioned that India has raised these issues with Bangladesh’s authorities, urging them to take necessary measures to protect minority groups in the country.

The recent violence has intensified amid political unrest in Bangladesh, particularly following the removal of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Over 88 attacks on minorities have been reported, with widespread looting, arson, and murders. The situation worsened with the arrest of an ISKCON monk in October, accused of disrespecting the national flag, which led to protests both in Bangladesh and abroad.

Jaishankar’s remarks underline the Indian government’s continued concern regarding the safety of its citizens and the broader human rights situation in Bangladesh.
