ISKCON Raises Alarm Over Attack on Lawyer Representing Hindu Monk in Bangladesh

Kolkata, December 3, 2024: Advocate Ramen Roy, who represented Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Prabhu in a legal case in Bangladesh, was brutally attacked at his home, allegedly by Islamists. The assault left him critically injured, and he is now in the ICU fighting for his life. This incident occurred following Roy’s legal advocacy for the monk, who had been arrested and denied bail over his activism for the rights of the Hindu minority in the country.

According to ISKCON Kolkata spokesperson Radharamn Das, the attack underscores the dangers faced by individuals defending religious minorities in Bangladesh. Das called for prayers and highlighted the growing risks to human rights defenders in the region. The incident has drawn international concern and condemnation from various advocacy groups.

Chinmoy Krishna Prabhu, a prominent spokesperson for Bangladesh’s Hindu community, was arrested while traveling to attend a rally. His detention and subsequent denial of bail have intensified discussions about the systemic challenges confronting the Hindu minority in Bangladesh, whose population has significantly declined due to ongoing socio-political marginalization.

The attack on Advocate Roy has prompted calls for international attention to the safety of religious minorities and their advocates in Bangladesh. This case highlights the urgent need for global efforts to address the vulnerabilities of these communities and safeguard their rights in an increasingly hostile environment.
