New Delhi, December 13, 2024 – Germany’s ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) is positioning itself as a key player in India’s ambitious plan to modernize its naval fleet under the Project 75 India (P75I) submarine program. This program involves building six advanced conventional submarines equipped with Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) technology, essential for enhanced endurance and stealth capabilities in underwater operations.
TKMS, in collaboration with India’s Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), has emerged as a leading contender for the $5.2 billion contract. The partnership’s competitive edge comes from the successful demonstration of its proven AIP system during field trials, a critical feature for modern submarine warfare. The submarines will be constructed in India, aligning with the “Make in India” initiative and enhancing domestic defense production. Beyond technical advancements, this deal highlights strengthening Indo-German defense collaboration amidst escalating maritime tensions in the Indo-Pacific region.
If finalized, this project could transform India into a global hub for submarine construction, reinforcing both national security and indigenous defense industries. With the Indian Navy approaching a final decision, TKMS’s proposal represents a significant step toward shaping the future of India’s underwater combat capabilities.
