
New Delhi, April 8, 2025 – Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal shared that since 2014, India has seen a 170% increase in the number of seafarers, rising from 1.17 lakh to 3.17 lakh, thanks to proactive measures in maritime education. This growth reflects the government’s efforts to improve maritime training and education across the country.
In addition, the number of women seafarers has surged by an impressive 700%, showcasing a commitment to gender inclusion in the maritime sector. These advancements are part of India’s broader goal to strengthen its maritime workforce and boost its presence in the global shipping industry.
