India, Saudi Arabia Deepen Ties: Jaishankar Meets Saudi FM for Strategic Talks

NEW DELHI: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud in New Delhi at Hyderabad House, beginning discussions for the second meeting of the Political, Security, Social, and Cultural Committee of the India-Saudi Arabia Strategic Partnership Council. Jaishankar shared the update on X, welcoming Prince Faisal to the capital and expressing optimism for productive discussions.

Prince Faisal arrived in India on Tuesday for a two-day visit. The Strategic Partnership Council, established in 2019 during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Saudi Arabia, has been a focal point for bilateral cooperation. During the meeting, the ministers reviewed the progress of the four Joint Working Groups: Agriculture and Food Security, Energy, Technology and IT, and Industry and Infrastructure, with discussions centered on deepening trade and investment.

India and Saudi Arabia have a long-standing relationship, with diplomatic ties established in 1947 and evolving through pivotal moments such as King Abdullah’s visit in 2006 and the signing of the “Delhi Declaration.” In 2010, the “Riyadh Declaration” elevated the relationship to a strategic partnership, underscoring the countries’ commitment to comprehensive cooperation.

In recent years, high-level visits have further strengthened ties. PM Modi’s 2016 visit to Riyadh focused on enhanced cooperation across political, economic, security, and defense areas. Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman’s 2019 visit also marked a milestone, with Saudi Arabia committing to a $100 billion investment in India and the signing of agreements spanning sectors such as tourism, housing, and renewable energy.
