IIT Kharagpur’s Zero-Threshold Raman Laser Set to Transform Quantum Technologies

Kolkata, February 15, 2025: Researchers at IIT Kharagpur have developed a zero-threshold Raman laser that could transform nanoscale laser technology and enhance quantum communications. The technology, published in Physical Review B, generates light with low power using the Raman scattering effect and was funded by the Science and Engineering Research Board and the Ministry of Education (STARS), Government of India.

The innovation involves an optical microcavity with reflective mirrors and a semiconductor layer that shifts the frequency of quantum light sources while preserving their quantum properties. Led by Dr. Sajal Dhara, this breakthrough has the potential to advance semiconductor quantum optics and contribute to the future of quantum technologies.
