    ICMR Confirms HMPV Cases in Karnataka: Health Ministry on High Alert

    Bengaluru, January 6, 2025 – The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has confirmed two cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in Karnataka, marking the first reported instances of the virus in the state. The Union Health Ministry announced that the cases were detected through routine surveillance for respiratory viral pathogens. The infections were identified in two infants admitted to a private hospital in Bengaluru, both with a history of bronchopneumonia.

    The first case involved a three-month-old female infant who was diagnosed with HMPV but has since been discharged after receiving treatment. The second case, an eight-month-old male infant, tested positive for the virus on January 3 and is currently recovering. Health authorities have urged vigilance while emphasizing that both cases are being closely monitored as part of enhanced disease surveillance efforts.
