Ambala, December 14, 2024: In response to a planned farmers’ protest march towards Delhi, the Haryana government has announced the temporary suspension of mobile internet and bulk SMS services in parts of Ambala from December 14 to 17. This precautionary measure is aimed at maintaining public safety and ensuring law and order during the protests, as authorities anticipate large-scale demonstrations.
The farmers, representing various unions, are marching towards the national capital to demand a legal guarantee for the Minimum Support Price (MSP) on crops, debt relief for farmers, pensions for agricultural laborers, and the reinstatement of the Land Acquisition Act. The protest is part of a broader movement that has seen increased tension in recent weeks over the government’s handling of agricultural issues.
Security measures have been intensified, particularly along critical points like the Ambala-Delhi border. Barricades and water cannons have been deployed to prevent disruptions, and Section 144 of the CrPC has been invoked to prohibit gatherings of more than five people in the area. These steps come as the authorities work to balance public safety with the farmers’ right to protest peacefully.
