Greenland PM Open to Talks with Trump, Reaffirms Independence Aspirations

Copenhagen, January 11, 2025: Greenland’s Prime Minister, Múte Egede, has expressed his readiness to hold discussions with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump following Trump’s remarks about Greenland’s strategic significance. Egede stressed that while Greenland values its relationship with the United States, the island’s people firmly oppose becoming part of America. He reiterated Greenland’s aspirations for independence and self-governance, asserting that the territory belongs to its own people, not to Denmark or the U.S.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen also expressed her willingness to engage in talks with President-elect Trump to address these concerns. Frederiksen emphasized the importance of respecting Greenland’s sovereignty while fostering cooperative relations between the U.S., Denmark, and Greenland. The discussions have sparked wider concerns in Denmark and Europe, given the U.S.’s strategic role as an ally to the European Union and NATO.
