New Delhi, February 6, 2025 – The development of Directed Energy Weapons (DEWs), or laser weapon systems, is gaining momentum globally, with China, the United States, and India advancing rapidly. The U.S. is enhancing its 300 kW IFPC-HEL system, while China has deployed its 30 kW LW-30 laser weapon. India, through its Defense Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), is focusing on high-energy lasers and microwave systems to counter emerging threats, particularly drones, in response to China’s technological strides.
These laser weapons are set to reshape defense strategies by offering speed and precision, potentially replacing traditional missile defense systems. However, challenges such as power needs, weather interference, and ethical concerns still hinder their widespread deployment. Despite these hurdles, DEWs are expected to play a vital role in future warfare, offering nations a cutting-edge defense option
