Brussels, April 10, 2025 – The European Union has decided to suspend its planned retaliatory tariffs against the United States for 90 days, following President Donald Trump’s decision to pause certain global tariffs. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen highlighted that this suspension provides room for negotiations and emphasized that while the EU seeks a negotiated resolution, countermeasures will be reinstated if talks fail.
The move comes after President Trump reduced the tariff on EU imports from 20% to 10%, while increasing tariffs on Chinese imports to 125%. The EU’s pause indicates a willingness to engage in dialogue, aiming to de-escalate trade tensions. Both the US and the EU have shown that they are prepared to take further actions if negotiations do not yield favorable outcomes.
