New Delhi, December 14, 2024: The Union government is set to introduce the ‘One Nation, One Poll’ Bill in the Lok Sabha on Monday during the ongoing Winter Session of Parliament. This proposal, supported by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, aims to synchronize elections for the Lok Sabha, state assemblies, municipalities, and panchayats to reduce the frequency of elections and enhance cost efficiency.
The bill is based on recommendations from a high-level committee chaired by former President Ram Nath Kovind. The committee’s report highlights the economic and administrative benefits of simultaneous elections, such as reducing the financial burden on the exchequer, minimizing disruptions caused by the frequent enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct, and allowing governments to prioritize governance over continuous electoral campaigns.
If passed, the bill will necessitate constitutional amendments and require cooperation from state governments. While the ruling party and its allies have expressed strong support for the proposal, opposition leaders, including Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, have raised concerns about its feasibility and its potential to dilute regional issues during elections.
