New Delhi: In response to rising violence and law and order issues in Manipur, the Centre has dispatched 20 additional companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) to the state. These units, which include 15 from the CRPF and 5 from the Border Security Force (BSF), were airlifted on Tuesday night as part of immediate deployment orders from the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The decision comes after a fierce gunbattle on Monday between suspected militants and the CRPF in Jiribam district, which led to the death of at least 10 militants. A large cache of sophisticated weapons was also seized by the forces.
These 20 additional companies will reinforce the 198 CAPF companies already deployed in Manipur due to ongoing ethnic violence since May of the previous year, which has claimed over 200 lives. The newly deployed units will remain in the state until November 30, with the possibility of an extension.
Tension remains high in the state, particularly in Jiribam and Imphal Valley, where clashes between armed groups from opposing factions have led to more violence.
