New Delhi, December 3, 2024 — The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is planning a significant change to its class 10 and class 12 examination framework. Starting from the 2026-2027 academic year, students will have the option to choose between two levels of Science and Social Science subjects, offering them greater flexibility in their academic choices.
The two-level system will allow students to select either a standard or advanced version of these subjects. This initiative aims to reduce academic pressure by catering to diverse student capabilities. For example, students opting for the standard level will encounter a less rigorous syllabus, while those choosing the advanced level will face a more challenging curriculum. This approach is designed to better align with students’ career paths and higher education aspirations.
This change is part of CBSE’s broader educational reforms, which also include plans to conduct board exams twice a year, beginning in the 2025-2026 academic session. These reforms are expected to provide students with additional opportunities to clear their exams and improve their overall academic experience. The reforms align with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which seeks to modernize India’s educational system and ensure it remains competitive on a global scale.
CBSE’s proposal is expected to offer students a more personalized educational experience, addressing varying learning needs. These changes reflect the board’s commitment to creating a flexible and inclusive educational environment that supports students’ academic growth and future aspirations.
