NEW DELHI: BJP leaders and their supporters held a protest near Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s residence, sparked by allegations of misuse of public funds during his tenure. The protest was centered around claims that Kejriwal spent millions of rupees on lavish items at his official residence, the “Sheeshmahal” bungalow, located at 6 Flagstaff Road. The BJP accused Kejriwal of installing luxurious amenities such as high-end toilet seats worth Rs 12 lakh, premium washbasins, and reclining sofas, all allegedly funded by taxpayers. The controversy has ignited widespread outrage over the perceived misuse of state resources.
Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva led the protests, accusing Kejriwal of misappropriating public funds for personal luxury. He also alleged that the expensive items were missing after Kejriwal vacated the bungalow, further fueling the controversy. BJP leaders demanded a thorough investigation into the matter and drew comparisons to previous cases of alleged financial mismanagement in the government. Kailash Gahlot, a recent defector to the BJP, also joined the criticism, pointing out the stark contrast between the government’s spending on luxury and its underperformance in critical infrastructure sectors.
In response, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) dismissed the accusations as politically motivated, accusing the BJP of attempting to tarnish Kejriwal’s image. AAP leaders emphasized that Kejriwal had vacated the residence in accordance with constitutional guidelines and that no evidence of wrongdoing had been found despite multiple investigations. The party further stated that the allegations were an attempt to discredit Kejriwal’s leadership and deflect attention from the BJP’s own shortcomings.
The ongoing dispute over the misuse of public funds has led to heightened political tensions in Delhi. While the BJP continues to demand accountability and an investigation into the matter, AAP maintains that the claims are baseless and part of a larger political strategy by the opposition to undermine Kejriwal’s reputation.
