WASHINGTON: As President Joe Biden’s term nears its end, his administration is working swiftly to preserve his legacy by dispersing billions in grants and implementing key policies before President-elect Donald Trump takes office in January. Biden’s team is focused on ensuring that funds from the landmark infrastructure and climate laws continue to flow, with the aim of securing lasting progress on transportation, environmental, and clean-energy projects. For example, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg recently announced over USD 3.4 billion in grants for transportation infrastructure and sustainability initiatives.
In addition to infrastructure, the Biden administration has expedited environmental goals, such as the removal of lead pipes and methane emissions regulations. The Environmental Protection Agency has committed nearly USD 3 billion to assist local water systems, while the Energy Department is supporting electric vehicle manufacturing with a USD 544 million loan. The urgency of these actions reflects the administration’s desire to complete critical projects before Biden’s term ends.
Biden is also prioritizing military aid, aiming to rush USD 7.1 billion in weapons spending to ensure these funds are used before Trump takes office. Meanwhile, the administration is working to confirm as many federal judges as possible, with the Senate recently confirming a U.S. District Court judge. There are also efforts to finalize student loan forgiveness for financially struggling individuals, despite potential legal challenges.
Despite Trump’s plans to rescind several Biden policies, the administration is determined to make the most of its remaining time in office, focusing on securing tangible achievements that will endure beyond Biden’s presidency.
