Dhaka, February 26, 2025—Bangladesh Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman reaffirmed that the 2009 mutiny was solely carried out by Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) soldiers, dismissing any doubts. Speaking at a commemorative event, he warned against questioning the judicial process and emphasized that those convicted had rightfully served their sentences.
The mutiny on February 25-26, 2009, led to 74 deaths, including 57 army officers such as BDR chief Maj Gen Shakil Ahmed. In response, the Awami League government of then-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina restructured the force, renaming it Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB). The event marked the newly declared “National Martyred Army Day” to honor the fallen officers.
