Ashoka Claims Siddaramaiah’s Weak Leadership Signals End of Congress Rule in Karnataka

Chitradurga: R. Ashoka, the Leader of Opposition in the Karnataka Assembly, has stated that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s position has become increasingly unstable, and the Congress government under his leadership is nearing its end. Ashoka’s comments follow Siddaramaiah’s repeated assertions that he will continue as CM, which, according to Ashoka, reflect a weakening position that has led to questions about the government’s stability. He pointed to D. K. Shivakumar, the Deputy CM, who has been making claims about becoming the next Chief Minister, further fueling doubts over the current leadership.

Ashoka also recalled the instability within the JD(S)-Congress coalition government, highlighting how similar claims of invulnerability were made before the government collapsed due to the defection of 14 Congress MLAs. He argued that Congress MLAs are disillusioned, noting that they have not seen any real development in the last 17 months under Siddaramaiah’s leadership. This, he said, has caused growing frustration among the MLAs, who now fear that their association with the Chief Minister will yield no benefits.

Adding to the controversy, Ashoka cited claims by BJP state president B. Y. Vijayendra, who suggested that Siddaramaiah, under investigation for his involvement in the MUDA site allotment case, might soon resign. Both D. K. Shivakumar and Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge are reportedly aware of when Siddaramaiah might step down, according to Ashoka. The BJP has been pressing for Siddaramaiah’s resignation, especially in light of the ongoing corruption investigations.

Ashoka’s comments also addressed the frequent speculation about the government’s longevity. He noted that while questions about the stability of a government typically arise toward the end of its term, in this case, such doubts are emerging early, with ongoing claims of leadership changes, corruption allegations, and political infighting. Despite these issues, Siddaramaiah has continued to insist on his role as Chief Minister, a stance that Ashoka argues reflects the weakening of his position. The Leader of Opposition concluded that Siddaramaiah’s government is likely nearing its end.
