Apple’s iOS in the Spotlight: EU Pushes for Third-Party Access Amid Privacy Concerns

London, December 19, 2024: The European Union (EU) has urged Apple to open its iOS operating system to third-party developers under the Digital Markets Act (DMA), which aims to enhance competition and user choice. The request includes granting third-party developers access to system features such as background execution, allowing better functionality for apps, and improving interoperability with devices like smartwatches and headphones.

The move is expected to provide users with more app choices, improved device compatibility, and alternative distribution methods outside the App Store. However, Apple has expressed concerns about potential privacy and security risks, warning that broad access could compromise user data protection. Meta has accused Apple of using privacy concerns as a cover for anticompetitive practices.

The European Commission is seeking feedback from companies by January 9, 2025, with final measures set to be established by March 2025. Failure to comply could result in an investigation and fines up to 10% of Apple’s global annual sales. The decision will shape how users interact with their devices and the apps they use, balancing innovation with security concerns.
