Amaravati, January 25, 2025: The Andhra Pradesh Police Department plans to install one lakh CCTV cameras statewide by March to enhance surveillance and curb crime. These cameras will be strategically placed in sensitive areas like places of worship, crime hotspots, and major intersections, with drones supplementing coverage where needed. The initiative combines government funding and public participation, linking all cameras to local police stations and command centers.
Officials highlighted that the 14,000 cameras installed during the TDP government (2014-19) were poorly maintained under the YSRCP government, leading to higher crime rates. Since the coalition government took over, 25,250 cameras have been installed, solving 1,989 cases and identifying 2,434 suspects. The planned cameras aim to reduce crime, enable facial recognition, and improve crime prevention strategies.
