Amaravati, December 12: The Andhra Pradesh government has filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court declaring Amaravati as the state’s sole capital. This filing follows the Andhra Pradesh High Court’s ruling, which supported Amaravati as the exclusive capital, effectively halting the government’s controversial plan to have three capitals.
In the affidavit, the government asserts that Amaravati was developed as the capital in line with state reorganization plans and legal commitments made thereafter. The government pointed to the significant infrastructure and investments made in Amaravati, emphasizing its role as the central administrative and legislative hub.
This development temporarily puts aside earlier proposals to designate Visakhapatnam as the executive capital and Kurnool as the judicial capital. The three-capital proposal, part of the state’s decentralization efforts, had been met with protests, particularly from Amaravati farmers who had given up land for the capital’s development under prior agreements.
The Supreme Court is expected to consider the affidavit as part of ongoing legal proceedings. The court’s decision could have far-reaching implications for Andhra Pradesh’s governance structure, reigniting debates over regional equality and resource distribution.
