Dasara Liquor Sales in the Combined Warangal District: During the Dasara festival, liquor sales in the combined Warangal district of Telangana set a record in the state. The district registered the highest growth in the state. In the Warangal urban and rural areas, sales increased by 49.88% and in Jangaon district by 89.87%. The combined Warangal district has 294 wine shops and 134 bars and restaurants. Last year, sales during the festival period amounted to ₹95.53 crore, while this year, sales reached ₹142.76 crore within just 14 days—a notable increase of around ₹48.26 crore. With Diwali at the end of this month, excise officials expect sales to increase further.
Reasons Behind This: There are several reasons for the increase in liquor sales in the combined Warangal district. The main factor is chain shops. Liquor is being sold in small grocery stores in villages and even in homes. These shops often remain open without adhering to time restrictions. In some areas, liquor is available 24 hours a day. Due to the abundance of chain shops in rural areas as well as in the outskirts of the city, they are purchasing liquor from wine shops and selling it at higher prices. Warangal city has many educational institutions, and officials have observed that a large number of young people are purchasing alcohol. They have mentioned that liquor is not being sold to students and minors.
Digital Payments Facility: Meanwhile, liquor sales have also picked up in Andhra Pradesh. With the tender process already completed, liquor shops opened from Wednesday. The government has also introduced digital payments as a convenient option. During the YSRCP government’s tenure, unbranded liquor was sold to the public, but now branded products are available. As a result, a large number of customers are visiting liquor shops to make purchases.
